In the world of sneakers, speed, power, and legend are often dominated by male narratives. But when you turn your gaze to women working in design studios, workshops, and even on the streets, you'll discover a more vivid picture: they transform sneakers from "functional equipment" into carriers of attitude through color, structure, material, and philosophy.

These creations aren't "shrunk men's shoes" but represent women's original voice in sneaker culture.

Veneda Carter

If you follow sneaker and street style trends, you've likely seen posts by this renowned stylist—known for bold yet coordinated outfits, often centered around her footwear, with a Contax camera in hand. Her unique color harmonies and style choices create an unmistakable aesthetic.

After leaving the Yeezy team, she focused on developing her eponymous brand VENEDA CARTER, and recently announced her collaborative sneaker with Nike—「VENEDA CARTER NIKE AIR MAX MUSE」.

VENEDA CARTER NIKE AIR MAX MUSE

Unlike the sleek "liquid metal" lines of standard models, this collaboration features rounded, contours. Dominated by white with military green accents and pink air cushioning, it embodies Veneda Carter's personal style—balancing elegance with everyday wear while expanding the shoe's versatility.

"I love that my Air Max Muse can be styled in so many different ways and express so many unique personalities," Carter says. "You can wear it all day, whether you're just walking around, going to a party, having dinner, or hitting the gym. The textured lace tips that match my jewelry also make the shoe stand out in any setting, giving it a very high-end look."

Looking back at Veneda Carter's career, her path wasn't smooth. As a model, she faced frequent rejection for not fitting conventional thin beauty standards. Rather than discouragement, these experiences led to a pivotal 2016 message from the Yeezy team following her final modeling audition—a breakthrough earned through years of perseverance rather than mere luck.

Daniëlle Cathari

This graduate of Amsterdam Fashion Institute gained recognition through deconstructed vintage Adidas pieces, becoming the first student winner at VFiles Fashion Show during New York Fashion Week 2017.

Subsequent collaborations with adidas Originals and Clarks, plus her role as Kith Women's Creative Director, shaped her diverse design background.

New Balance「pistachio-chocolate 991V2」

Cathari's debut collaboration with New Balance drew inspiration from matcha, featuring pistachio-green suede uppers paired with dark brown mesh and silver accents. Her color sense and retro preferences are evident in the cream midsole and black outsole, with Made in UK craftsmanship ensuring exceptional quality.

Cathari's work consistently creates "harmony" through complementary colors and tailored fabrics, achieving the perfect balance of comfort and elegance. For her, brown serves as the ultimate harmonizing color—challenging yet full of potential, bringing sophistication and confidence to her designs.

Susan Fang

"SUSAN FANG" shows are renowned for their dreamlike aesthetics, featuring garments incorporating flowers, pearls, and 3D printing. Founder Susan Fang's core design language centers on "pure beauty," translating her visionary aesthetics into wearable art.

She participated in Nike's Boundless Girl initiative in Yunnan, creating nature-inspired playgrounds to encourage girls to run and pursue dreams. Two years later, the highly anticipated SUSAN FANG X Nike collaboration launched with two iconic silhouettes:

V2K Run: Showcasing ripple patterns from childhood drawings

Dunk Low: Featuring jacquard material derived from her mother's artwork, with embroidered flowers surrounding the Swoosh symbolizing mother-daughter creativity and gentle strength

This collaboration represents bold speculation about future footwear—its ethereal, sci-fi futurism transforms sneakers into sensory extensions for experiencing earth, wind, and water. More than just a fashion partnership, it pays tribute to nature and family while exploring the softness and resilience in feminine strength.

Sandy Liang

Searches for "sandyliang" frequently associate with the French term "Coquette" (flirtatious). Her brand incorporates lace, ruffles, soft colors, and bows, drawing inspiration from Chinatown nostalgia, girlhood memories, and her grandmother's nonchalant attitude toward fashion norms. Her designs transcend traditional gendered gazes, emphasizing pure wearability and coolness.

SANDY LIANG X Salomon

Featured at New York Fashion Week's Fall/Winter 24 show, their collaboration includes:

Speedcross 3: Transformed with pale pink satin ribbons recalling ballet shoe aesthetics, balancing lightweight cushioning with protective functionality

RX MJ: Merging Mary Jane elements suitable for both dresses and mountain terrain

Pop-up events coincided at Shanghai LABELHOOD and Beijing Sanlitun SOULGOODS.

Through these explorations, Sandy Liang redefines "Coquette" as a language of female autonomy. Whether through ribbon-transformed trail shoes or everyday bow details, she reminds us that girlhood isn't age-limited but can exist authentically across urban, street, and mountain landscapes. This embodies SANDY LIANG's true charm—stitching generations of girls' dreams into contemporary reality.

Beyond Them

From Veneda Carter to Danielle Cathari, Susan Fang to Sandy Liang, these female designers continuously rewrite sneaker rules. They bring not just aesthetic changes but expand the cultural significance of sneaker culture.

Some translate personal experiences into design language, others infuse family memories into footwear narratives, while still others balance tradition and future. Together they prove sneaker culture isn't solely about male-defined speed and power—it equally carries women's experiences, values, and creativity.
